After looking at the 11th grade ELA standards, I found many that relied on digital usage standards. Many objectives consisted of completing digital presentations on a book or comparisons of experiments. One standard reflected on students reading Wiesel's "Night", and researching the history of genocide in conjuction with the reading. This digital standard tests students' ability to complete online research and understand how to translate that information in the context of the book. I think that I am prepared to implement this standard based on my skill set, with a different book. I have not read "Night", but if I found a book that was to standards that I was familiar with, having students research and present information based on the reading could be a great analysis project. I think it is great that these digital standards can prepare high schoolers how to use technology more effectively.
A resource that seems very helpful in my teaching could be an informative video and lesson plan about a class topic. One interesting standard and lesson plan was the introduction of political communication methods to the students. This lesson focuses on the subjec area of social studies and science. Using an instructional PowerPoint and computer-based assignments to test students' understanding is a great way to tackle this standard of civic engagement and computer science. The integration of both teaches students a new and interesting topic about our changing communication methods in a political context. At the same time, it opens students up to being more comfortable on a computer.
Learning about Google advanced searching showed me there are more useful features I do not know about technology and the Internet. I found some of them to be very useful, and could see myself using them in the future. Searching within a specific website was the most interesting to me. This allows a user to search a topic, but only pull results from a specific site. For example, if you are searching for one topic of news article, but specific to the New York Times, this shortcut searches just from that news site. This feature is beneficial in many ways, as it makes researching more efficient and direct. It is important for educators to teach students to use features like these so they can effectively navigate the Internet. Educators need to be proficient Internet searchers because the Internet is a useful resource that when used correctly, can truly help students in their educational journey.
Each day, we hear more and more stories about fellow students using artificial intelligence to complete class assignments. It has become a popular tool for students, as a way to create ideas or make suggestions for studying or homework help. Students have taken advantage of AI programs like ChatGPT to cheat through homework assignments, which worries educators. When used properly, there are educational benefits of AI like brainstorming ideas or bouncing off suggestions for a students’ writers block. Many students are using this resource as a crutch, though. I think that in a K-12 setting, it has become a dangerous tool that many students are relying on heavily. Artificial intelligence is having an impact on some students’ learning ability as they are not truly understanding topics when AI does everything for them. We should consider the effects of this tool in the classroom for the future.
